It is fall, and area farmers are busy working in the fields. Working ground for fall and spring planting is underway. Fall planting of wheat, alfalfa or a winter cover crop has started.

The soybean harvest is dry, and combines are busy every day. Shelling corn is just starting.

Centerra Co-op branch manager in Smithville, Joe Wilson, said the long, wet spring delayed planting and the hot, dry summer has affected this year's harvest. Farmers are saying average or a little below this year.

The moisture content of the grain is checked before a field is harvested. Soybeans should be as close to 13 percent as possible and corn at 15 percent.

Most of the corn and beans in this area will be made into animal feed. Some farmers will dry and store if for their own use, while others will take it to a grain elevator to dry for later use or sell it.
